    RésuméDownloaded data from diving computers can offer invaluable insights into diving incidents resulting in fatalities. Such data form an essential part of subsequent investigations or in legal actions related to the diving incident. It is often tempting to accept the information being displayed from a computer download without question. However, there is a large variability between the makes and models of dive computer in how the data are recorded, stored and re-displayed and caution must be employed in the interpretation of the evidence. In reporting on downloaded data, investigators should be fully aware of the limitations in the data retrieved. They should also know exactly how to interpret parameters such as: the accuracy of the dive profile; the effects of different mode settings; the precision of displayed water temperatures; the potential for misrepresenting breathing rates where there are data from integrated monitoring systems, and be able to challenge some forms of displayed information either through re-modelling based on the pressure/time profiles or by testing the computers in standardised conditions.

    RésuméINTRODUCTION: Dive computers are used in some occupational diving sectors to manage decompression but there is little independent assessment of their performance. A significant proportion of occupational diving operations employ single square-wave pressure exposures in support of their work. METHODS: Single examples of 43 models of dive computer were compressed to five simulated depths between 15 and 50 metres' sea water (msw) and maintained at those depths until they had registered over 30 minutes of decompression. At each depth, and for each model, downloaded data were used to collate the times at which the unit was still registering "no decompression" and the times at which various levels of decompression were indicated or exceeded. Each depth profile was replicated three times for most models. RESULTS: Decompression isopleths for no-stop dives indicated that computers tended to be more conservative than standard decompression tables at depths shallower than 30 msw but less conservative between 30-50 msw. For dives requiring decompression, computers were predominantly more conservative than tables across the whole depth range tested. There was considerable variation between models in the times permitted at all of the depth/decompression combinations. CONCLUSIONS: The present study would support the use of some dive computers for controlling single, square-wave diving by some occupational sectors. The choice of which makes and models to use would have to consider their specific dive management characteristics which may additionally be affected by the intended operational depth and whether staged decompression was permitted.

    RésuméThe analysis of genetic structure is an important tool for the management of harvested and threatened species. Individual clustering methods and tests of Isolation by Distance (IBD) are currently used in this context. They have been applied to the red coral Corallium rubrum but some questions remained due to contrasted results among studies and limits in their interpretations. In this study, we used simulated and empirical data for a better understanding of the genetic structure in this species. We tested the impact of IBD between demes, sampling scheme and of clustering methods (BAPS, STRUCTURE or DAPC) on the inferred structure. By matching simulated scenarios to the empirical data, we first confirm that the genetic structure of the red coral is characterized by a combination between IBD and weak genetic breaks. Then, we demonstrate how the sampling scheme influences the results of the clustering methods. We also reveal the contrasted efficiencies of these methods to recover real demes or groups of demes in a context of IBD. Overall, our study underline the interest of comparing the results of different clustering methods and of using simulated data for interpreting empirical genetical data.

    RésuméThe objective of scientific divers using scuba as a research tool is to be able to effectively work under pressure without incurring acute or chronic health effects. Chapters in this volume address underwater science results achieved through the use of scuba. This particular discussion considers physiological and decompression sickness parameters and effects that all humans and marine animals are subject to on a dive. We know that decompression sickness is triggered by a rapid reduction of ambient pressure that allows dissolved inert gas in the body to come out of solution in gas form (i.e., as bubbles.) Dive computers have been accepted as effective tools in assisting divers with the real-time monitoring of their decompression status. Oxygen-enriched air mixtures allow extensions of bottom times in certain depth ranges and optimize decompression on ascent. However, we continue to search for better tools and methods to take our science deeper. Since the publication of Haldane’s “Prevention of Compressed-Air Illness” over 100 years ago, a variety of new research directions have attempted to further explain and reduce the occurrence of the decompression sickness syndrome. Humans have ventured under water for at least 2,000 years without the use of an external compressed air source. However, observations of physiological adaptations in breath-hold diving marine mammals and birds eclipse the capabilities of human breath-hold divers. Nitrogen narcosis and neurological decompression sickness on a single breath-hold dive can occur because of the depths and durations involved. The consummate divers, marine mammals and diving birds, have evolved numerous physiological and morphological adaptations that contribute to such remarkable diving capacity and obviate the two fundamental concerns of diving physiology: oxygen store management and the effects of pressure at depth. A more thorough understanding of the physiology underlying these phenomenal divers may also assist in preventing and treating diving-related pathologies in humans.

    RésuméScientific diving (SD) performed by scientists in Belgian North Sea waters (re) started in 2001. SD is operated from large research vessels because of the geographical and weather conditions of these waters. From 2001 to date some 1,200 man-dives have been conducted in the offshore conditions of the Belgian North Sea for the benefit of several research programs with no accidents reported. Belgian scientists participate in many other SD activities in foreign waters. In order to keep a high level of safety in SD operations specific training was organized in 2009 for all Belgian scientists. This training was organized by scientists and consists of a common module based on the (Advanced) European Scientific Diver ((A)ESD) standard and on other specialized modules. The common module, now accepted by Belgian law, is organized in a calm and clear water location in the Mediterranean Sea since the specialized offshore North Sea module is operated from one of the available research vessel in true field conditions. To complete the program a continuous training module, aimed at testing and developing new sampling techniques, was done in confined water (quarries) in Belgium. Moreover, a potential scientific output was proposed with the common module of the Belgian SD training. A more specific scientific experiment aimed at collecting new data using a given technique was proposed. The 2009 and 2010 experiments dedicated to sampling with differently designed airlift samplers provided data for two Master’s theses. The main lesson learned from 2009 was the appropriateness of the modular training system for Belgium. One may take into account that we address the needs of a scientific community living close to the North Sea featuring difficult to dive cold and dark offshore waters but operating mainly in foreign clear and warm waters.

    RésuméGlobal climate change is expected to alter the Arctic bioregion markedly in coming decades. As a result, monitoring of the expected and actual changes has assumed high scientific significance. Many marine science objectives are best supported with the use of scientific diving techniques. Some important keystone environments are located in extremely remote locations where land-based expeditions offer high flexibility and cost-effectiveness over ship-based operations. However, the extreme remoteness of some of these locations, coupled with complex and unreliable land, sea and air communications, means that there is rarely quick access (< 48 h) to any specialized diving medical intervention or recompression. In 2009, a land based expedition to the north end of Baffin Island was undertaken with the specific aim of establishing an inventory of the diversity of seaweeds and their pathogens that was broadly representative of a high Arctic marine environment. This account highlights some of the logistical considerations taken on that expedition; specifically it outlines the non-recompression treatment pathway that would have been adopted in the event of a diver suffering decompression illness.
