ESDP: European Scientific Diving Panel
The European Scientific Diving Panel (ESDP) acts as an operational platform to advance underwater scientific excellence and to promote and implement a practical support framework for scientific diving related activities.
Diving is a highly-productive, cost-effective research tool that supports underwater research through efficient and targeted sampling, quantitative survey, quantitative observation, making in situ measurement, undertaking impact studies, performing ecological analyses, evaluating new techniques, mapping underwater areas, profiling subtidal geology/geochemistry, and accurate deployment/retrieval of underwater apparatus.
ESDP is a panel of the European Network of Marine Research Institutes and Stations
The aims of the ESDP are to maintain and further develop a framework on which competencies for scientific diving [definition] recognised in different Member States under different training routes and differing levels of national legislation can be translated easily and effectively in order to facilitate greater participation by scientists in diving-based pan-European research programmes while continuing to advance collectively the available underwater techniques and technologies. encouraging international mobility in the European scientific diving community

What is the ESD Panel ?
ESDP meetings
The ESDP normally meets twice a year. Additional meetings, if required, may be proposed by the Chair.
The two core meetings take place at approximately 6 month intervals in the following format: The Spring meeting (February/March) can be open to the full membership and associated countries/interested parties, with a stronger scientific focus and ideally hosted by an emerging member.
The Autumn meeting (October/November) is focused more on core activities and strategic actions of the Panel.
List of the meetings since October 2008
(to the approved minutes)
Next meeting : Due to the covid-19 pandemic, face-to-face meetings are not possible. As day-long meetings by videoconference are not always as efficient a solution as desired, it was decided to hold shorter meetings at shorter intervals on a small number of agenda items. The next meeting via videoconference is scheduled for 20 January 2021 on the subject of ISO standardisation of ESD and ESDA standards.
